Why is my email noticification not working in instant messenger?

Ok well I've checked the preferences and under alerts & sounds have removed the wav file and the replaced it with another one and upon hitting the play on its working but my email notification is not working. The only way I know I have new mail is just by clicking on yahoo mail and then signing in.
