Why did John decide to baptize J*sus?

John was J*sus' cousin, and they were both Jews. In Judaism, there is no thing like baptism (I would know, I'm Jewish) so how did John get the idea (in the words of my close friend) to go "dum dum dum sprinkle sprinkle new religion" Not to be disrespectful, of course, I would really appreciate some comprehensive answers.
