Hound of the Baskervilles was written in the first decade of the 20th century, during what is called the Edwardian Era. It was a period of male dominance and uredness, but beneath the confident air of the zeitgeist, an uneasy undercurrent born of the sense of loss engendered by the death of Victoria in 1901 set the nations of Europe on a collision course that would be the tragedy of WWI.
