How to make a bad cello better, is it even possible?

so i have a lewis n son cello full size and it sucks.. it frustrates me, i hate playing this cello but its all i got, what can i do to it, to make it sound better? also the strings are way to hard to press down on the finger board that's my main complain, how can i make it softer to press? im a advanced player, i used to play a german cello in high school, witch was a dream, please help
