NEED LEGAL ANSWER about proper service & proof of service

I was MAILED, (standard USPS, not certified) an answer and response to Restraining Order and Child Custody motions I had filed in CA at my local county courthouse. Is this proper service? The envelope was hand written by the party who responded and is a party to the action. Please advise.
